New Readings in global modernism

I co-run the online reading group “New Readings in Global Modernism” with Chaeeun Lee and Chelsea Haines. The group meets three/four times a semester to review new works in the field and is open to early career scholars (ABD to Tenure Track) whose major research focus is twentieth century art from outside Europe or North America, and/or culturally marginalized practices within the west.

The group began meeting in August 2020 and readings to date have included Anneka Lenssen, Beautiful Agitation, (2020); Ana María Reyes, The Politics of Taste: Beatriz González and Cold War Aesthetics (2019); David Joselit, Heritage and Debt (2020); Yi Gu, Chinese Ways of Seeing and Open-Air Painting (2020); Christine Ho, Drawing from Life: Sketching and Socialist Realism in the People’s Republic of China (2020); and Jennifer Bajorek, Unfixed: Photography and Decolonial Imagination in West Africa (2020).
